Bansko hotels fall into three areas: the gondola area at the edge of town for the shortest walk to the lift, the old town for character and evenings out, and the roads towards Razlog and Banya for quieter spa stays. Pick the area first, then the hotel, because the walk to the gondola shapes every ski day.
Bansko at a glance
Bansko suits skiers who want a proper town around them, with restaurants, bars and a historic centre, rather than a purpose-built resort. Christmas, New Year and the February half-term weeks are the busiest. Queues can build at the gondola in peak weeks, so check the walk to the lift when you choose a hotel.
- Nearest airport: Sofia Airport, with Plovdiv Airport as an alternative
- Ski season: each year's dates appear on the official Bansko ski site
- Transfer: about 150 km by road from Sofia, according to the resort's getting-there page
Where to stay in Bansko: the zones
Bansko is a compact town below the Pirin mountains in south-west Bulgaria, and hotels in Bansko, Bulgaria, broadly fall into three areas. Each one changes how your day starts and ends.
Gondola area. The gondola station sits at the southern edge of town, and the streets around it are full of newer hotels, ski hire shops and ski school meeting points. Staying here gives you the shortest walk with skis, and the ski road brings you back to this end of town when snow allows. The trade-off is noise and crowds around the base in peak weeks.
Old town. North of the gondola area, the old town has cobbled lanes, stone houses and traditional taverns, known locally as mehanas. It is the better base if evenings matter as much as skiing. The walk to the gondola is longer, so check whether your hotel runs a ski shuttle before you book.
Razlog road and the Banya side. North of town, the roads run towards Razlog and the village of Banya, known for its mineral springs. You will need a car, taxi or shuttle to reach the gondola from here, so this side suits spa-first stays, families who want more room and anyone who skis only some days. A guide to the thermal pools is not on this site yet.

Ski area, season and getting there
The ski area sits above town and is reached mainly by the gondola, which climbs to Banderishka Polyana. The official lifts and pistes page lists chairlifts serving Shiligarnika, Plato, Todorka and Chalin Valog, and its piste list includes two ski roads that bring you back down towards town.
Season dates depend on snow. The resort sets the dates each year, so check the Bansko ski site before booking the first or last weeks. Bansko also hosts FIS World Cup races, and those weekends add to the crowds in town.
Sofia Airport is the nearest airport. The official Bansko ski site puts the town about 150 km from Sofia by road and about 220 km from Thessaloniki in Greece. Plovdiv Airport is a further option when its flights suit your dates.
If you are driving, the town's postcode is 2770, as shown in the contact details on the resort site. The same site notes regular bus links between Bansko and Bulgaria's main cities.
Bansko is also a stop on the narrow-gauge railway from Septemvri. It is slow but runs through the mountains, and current times are on the BDZ website.

Questions
How far is Bansko from Sofia Airport?
About 150 km by road, based on the official Bansko ski site's distance from Sofia, with a little extra from the airport on the city's eastern side. Allow extra time in snow. Plovdiv Airport is an alternative when flights suit.
When does the ski season in Bansko start and end?
It depends on snow, not on a fixed calendar. The resort sets the dates each year, so check the official Bansko ski site before booking the first or last weeks. The busiest weeks are usually around Christmas, New Year and February half-term.
Is Bansko good for beginners?
Yes, with one catch. The beginner slopes are up the mountain around Banderishka Polyana rather than in town, so you ride the gondola up and down each day. Ski schools and hire shops are easy to find near the gondola. Leave the ski road back to town until you feel confident, as it gets busy late in the day.
Which Bansko hotels are closest to the lifts?
Hotels in the gondola area, at the southern edge of town, are closest to the main lift. Of the hotels we track, Kempinski Hotel Grand Arena Bansko is ski-in/ski-out opposite the gondola, MPM Hotel Sport is ski-in/ski-out next to it, and Premier Luxury Mountain Resort is close to the gondola.
St. For Regnum Bansko Ski Hotel & SPA, ask how far it is from the gondola station in metres, and whether it runs a ski shuttle.
Is Bansko worth visiting in summer?
Yes, if you enjoy walking. Bansko sits at the edge of Pirin National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the mountain trails are the main summer draw. The old town still has its restaurants and taverns, and the mineral springs around Banya are close by. Check that your hotel is open, as some close between seasons.
